What to Wear for Your Family Photo Session

Your go-to style guide for family and senior portraits

Planning your family photo session or senior portraits is exciting—but let’s be honest, choosing what to wear can be the most stressful part. One of the most common questions I get from clients is:

“What should we wear for our photos?”

The good news? You don’t need a new wardrobe or a stylist. With a little planning, you’ll look and feel confident—and your photos will reflect that!

1. Choose a Color Palette

Instead of everyone matching, aim for coordinated outfits in 2–3 complementary tones. Think soft neutrals like cream, beige, sage green, dusty blue, or blush. These colors are timeless and photograph beautifully in both outdoor and studio settings.

Want a pop of personality? Add a subtle pattern or texture in a complementary tone. Just skip the neon colors, busy patterns, or large logos—they tend to be distracting and can quickly date your images.

2. Dress for the Season and Location

Let the season and session setting guide your outfit choices:

Fall: Layers like sweaters, scarves, and boots

Spring/Summer: Light fabrics, soft florals, sandals

Winter: Cozy textures like knits and flannel

Studio Sessions: Modern, clean looks in neutral tones

For senior portraits, bring a variety of 2–3 outfits: one casual, one elevated, and one that reflects your personality or interests.

3. Keep It Classic

The goal is to create timeless images you’ll love for years to come. Stick to classic silhouettes, simple patterns, and solid colors that won’t go out of style.

4. Add Layers & Accessories

Layers add visual interest and flexibility. A jacket, cardigan, hat, or scarf can add a nice touch without stealing the spotlight. Bonus: they’re great for adjusting to weather changes during your session.

Accessories like dainty jewelry or a soft headband can elevate the look without overdoing it.

5. Be Comfortable & Be Yourself

This is the most important tip: wear something that feels like you.

Choose pieces you feel great in.

For kids, go for soft, flexible fabrics that let them move freely.

For seniors, wear outfits that reflect your style and give you confidence.

When you’re comfortable, your joy and connection will come through naturally in every photo.

Final Tips

Lay all outfits out together before your session to make sure they coordinate.
